Maybe stories shouldn’t be re-written
But added onto
If we attempt to change what is, we close our eyes to truth
Yet, we can see anew
Once we gaze through our past, our lineage, ourselves
Re-writing has been a colonial practice
As is Halloween on Samhain
Recess at school
Your tenancy agreement
Cream in your coffee this morning
And the making of your microbiome
Your stomach has a story to tell
Recovering the beginning helps to digest the present
Tending to bacteria of shame, overgrown
Find your roots and flourish your internal diversity
So we can feel anew
Anew is not a re-write
It is an adding onto
Just like the mixing of you and me
This tree; that is our lineage
Including the branches that broke off in the storm
Yes, broken
The stomach of the Earth has a story to tell
It’s not up to us to re-write
The broken may have fallen
But the fallen are not forgotten
Instead, honoured as needed nurturers from below
You have a role in the story that is
Be in that place
And keep adding on so we can be anew
